The Unveiling Ceremony of the Confucius Institute at the University of Akron

The Confucius Institute at the University of Akron celebrated its unveiling ceremony on November 17, 2008 in Akron in the United States. The Confucius Institute was founded by the joint effort of Henan University and the University of Akron.

A press conference of the unveiling ceremony was held at 11:00 a.m., November 17. Guan Aihe, President of Henan University, Zi Xinjian, Vice-Director of Henan Education Department, Dr. Luis Proenza, chancellor of the University of Akron were present and were interviewed by journalists from Cleveland and Akron. They expressed hopes that the Confucius Institute could be a bridge of friendship between China and the United States.

The unveiling ceremony started at 12:00 a.m. Philip Kaufmann, chairman of the board of the University of Akron, gave a welcome speech. Both Chancellor Dr. Luis Proenza and President Guan Aihe reviewed the exchanges between the two universities in the past decade and pronounced that the establishment of the Confucius Institute strengthened the friendship between the two universities and also was a token of the friendship between the two countries. They also hoped that it would promote the spread of Chinese language and Chinese culture, and contribute to the development of the friendship between the two schools and deepen the understanding between the two nations.

In the afternoon, a Chinese Cultural Festival was held at the University of Akron. More than 1000 people, including leaders of the University of Akron, visitors from China, the students and faculty of the University of Akron as well as many local residents, took part in the festival.
