Resource and Environmental Information System Laboratory of The Lower and Middle Reaches of the Yellow River

Henan University,March 28, 2011

Henan University's Resource and Environmental Information System Laboratory of the Lower and Middle Reaches of the Yellow River has been developed from the basis of the Open Digital-Regional-Simulated Laboratory on University's Key Disciplinary Fields. As the result of government's key funding and construction, the laboratory has been gradually formed some distinctive research directions which are concerned with the Yellow River drainage area, such as Resource Management, the Rising of Central China, the Construction of Central Plain of China's Urban Agglomeration, etc.

We have 31 full-time researchers and 13 half-time researchers in the laboratory. Among the full-time researchers, there are 29 individuals have advanced technical job titles, 6 Distinguished Professor of provincial and university's level, 18 Doctorial Tutors, 10 individuals have the experience of studying abroad. The half-time and guest researchers come from professional institutions of the U.S.A., Australia, Singapore and home. The laboratory runs a primary discipline doctoral program of geography, 6 sub-discipline doctoral programs and a primary discipline doctoral research center.

The Lower and Middle Reaches of the Yellow River is the main focus of the researchers. The researchers are equipped with Earth System Science and Geography Information System and Technology and committing themselves to studying city's key problems of economic, ecological and environmental aspects that occur in the process of economic construction and social development of this area and Henan province. The four research directions are: the Information System of Simulated Geographical Environment, the Spatial Economy and Industrial Aggregation of Central Plain of China, the Landscape Pattern and Environmental Changes of the Lower and Middle Reaches of the Yellow River and the Simulated Development of Central Plain of China's Urban Agglomeration.

In recent 5 years, the lab hosted more than 30 national research projects, more than 40 provincial and ministerial projects. Over 400 academic articles and 40 monographs and some teaching materials were produced by the lab. It gained over 47 provincial ministerial rewards and undertook over 150 issues like the cities planning and land-use planning commissioned by the local government with 50 million funding.

The main achievements: the Yellow River Basin Data Center, Zheng-Kai Road and its' functional-area-planning simulation system on both sides, the regional integration plan of the central plains city group.

The lab was equipped with perfect geospatial data collection, analysis, visualization and application of hardware and software tools, among which the virtual geographical environment equipment, the software packages and the three-dimensional laser scanner (ILRIS-3D) etc are very advanced that they can only be found in the small number of famous universities and research institutes.
