Introduction of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

2015-02-03

The College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is one of the recognized and leading institutions in Henan province. Its predecessor could be traced back to Department of Chemistry of Zhong Zhou University in 1923. Professor Liqing Cao served as the first dean. During the nationwide adjustment of China’s Tertiary Education system in 1959, the Department of Chemistry was rebuilt on the basis of  Department of Chemistry of Kaifeng Normal College. The Department of Chemistry was renamed as Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in 1989 after the introducing of the chemical engineering major, afterwards as College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in 1995.

The College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering now consists of three departments: Department of Chemistry, Department of Chemical Engineering and Department of Material. The college has a strong teaching and research team. There are about 110 faculty members in the College, including 18 professors and 48 associate professors. Many faculty members have received various awards for their achievements in research and education. Chemistry and Chemical Engineering are key discipline of Henan province. Chemistry was designated as  national characteristic specialty in 2010. Applied Chemistry is the characteristic specialty in Hanan Province. The college has mobile Post-doctoral stations in Chemistry. The conditions for research and education is fine. The Center of Instrumental Analysis is equipped with modern instruments, including FT-IR, UV, GC, FT-NMR, ICP, etc.

With a brilliant history, the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Henan University has cultivated a large number of scholars and engineers. At present, the college offers four-year undergraduate programs for B. Sc. in four disciplines: chemistry, chemical engineering, applied chemistry and material chemistry. The college also offers M.S. degrees in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental science and chemistry pedagogy. In 2011 our Ph. D. program in Chemistry was approved as Primary Discipline Doctoral program by the Office of Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, which including five secondary subjects.

The College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering enrolls 220 undergraduate students and more than 70 graduate students each year. The training of the undergraduate students aims for comprehensive qualification with skills and knowledge system covering each of the sub-field of chemistry. The training of graduate students aims for specialists engaged in creative research or applied techniques in the related fields, such as chemical engineering, biology, material, environment, etc.

The college has three government funded key laboratories: the Key Laboratory for Special Functional Materials, approved as the co-build key lab of national ministry of Education and Henan province in 2003; the Key Laboratory of Natural Medicine and Immuno-Engineering of Henan Province,Science and technology in 2008; the Key Laboratory of Molybdenum and Tungsten Chemistry and Chemical Engineering was approved by Henan ministry of Education in 2008. Two Research Center: Henan Provincial Research Center of Engineering and Technology for Nanomaterials, Engineering Center of Ministry of Education for Antiwear and Antidrag Materials. Four research institutes founded by the University: Molecule and Crystal Engineering, Fine Chemical Engineering, Environmental and Analytic Science, Agricultural Chemistry.
